10 Ways to Be an In The Moment Mom

It can be hard to be in the moment. Time is fleeting. We hear that everywhere. Poems, cute memes, videos. The message is everywhere…time is flying by and the children won’t stay cute and snuggly forever.

Leaving The Dust Bunnies Isn’t Always Possible.

If you’re a mom you’ve read the poem:

Oh, cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby. Babies don’t keep.

If you’re like me, you read this poem, cried, and then felt guilty for all the times you cleaned, folded laundry, or did any other chore that gives your children a clean and healthy lifestyle.

Poems like this are cute, but they just aren’t realistic. I mean clothes have to be washed. Food has to be made. And often jobs have to be worked.

Discover a Balance

So what is a mom to do? I mean it isn’t feasible to always “let everything go” and be in the moment, or else we’d be living in filth and broke from all the fast food we’d buy to feed ourselves.

Be more in the moment

The answer is to be more intentional with your time. You can be more in-the-moment when you value your time. Your time is precious and how you spend it should be given thought and priority. Today I want to show you 10 ways you can be more in-the-moment with your children and those important to you.

10 Ways to Become an In The Moment Mom

1. Be mindful of your time.

Your time is valuable. Just like money, it is a commodity and it should be spent well.

As a mom, you have a million things that seek your attention and social media telling you an additional hundred things you should be doing in any given moment.

So it is important that you truly analyze what you’re spending your time doing. Then pick what you want to spend your time on, and make that your priority.

Don’t be afraid to say NO to things, events, and gatherings that don’t bring you joy.

2. Commit to what you are spending your time on.

When you decided to spend time with someone or on something, fully commit. It will benefit both you and the recipient.

When you play with your kiddos, give them your full attention and dive deep into the world they’ve invited you in to.

If you are working on a home project or chore, focus on it only, as best you can, and follow it to completion quickly.

Multi-tasking has to happen sometimes, but don’t fall into the “I have to be busy” trap.

3. Put down your phone.

Getting rid of outside distractions is the easiest way to feel more intentional at home.

It is easy to get lost in the world of social media, but just like I mentioned above be mindful of how you spend your time. Let your kids see you watching them, not your phone.

4. Limit TV and other screen time.

I am not one of those supermoms who go without a TV in our home (looking at you Joanna Gaines) but I have found that limiting how much time our family spends in front of the TV has a hugely positive impact on our family’s mood and well-being.

Without a TV you are kind of forced to interact and the effects are wonderful.

5. Decrease Mental Clutter.

One of the curses of motherhood is the never-ending mental load that moms wade through every day.

This load can often have us in a room with our people but our minds are wandering a million other places. We are there but not truly THERE.

6. Eliminate Physical Clutter

I have said it before but clutter causes chaos. It increases stress and it leads to further wasted time. If something in your home is not serving you a purpose or bringing you joy…GET. RID. OF. IT!

Stop spending time dusting that knick-knack you secretly hate or folding and refolding those pants that don’t fit. Again, focus your time and energy on what is important. Click here for a free, easy to follow, de-clutter plan

7. Shoot for Experiences and Memories Rather Than Things

Keeping in line with the eliminating clutter. Spend your money and time on experiences that bring your family together, excite your children, expand your mind, etc. These sort of investments will last longer than any toy you could buy your kids.

8. Get on Their Level

The experiences don’t have to cost money. Often times simply getting on your child’s level… like literally laying on the floor with them while they play, opens a whole new world of connection.

Play is how kids connect and even if you aren’t good at it, it means the world to your kids to have you pushing that car around or rocking that baby doll.

9. Be Mindful of Your Blessings

“Count your blessing, name them one by one…” But for real. Gratitude breeds positivity. You can begin by simply acknowledging what is amazing about your life each day.

For me I try to write these down but if you don’t like to write…simply take 5-10 minutes each day to focus and reflect on the blessings of your life.

10. Ask Questions of Those You Love

What happened to face to face conversations? Bring it back into your home. Ask your spouse about their day. Reconnect with your children at the end of the day
